Marketing / Promotion Tips |
Before you send anything out to anyone, make sure you speak to them on the phone first, and find out EXACTLY what they expect to receive from you. For example, most club bookers will want a bio on the band along with a sample of your music. However, about half will want your demo on CD if you have it. The rest won't be able to listen to your material unless it is on cassette.
When sending material out for airplay to radio stations, you usually need to include a bio, picture and press release on the band with each CD. But - if you haven't talked to someone there first, all the promo material will probably get tossed. Then, when you call to confirm that they received it, all they will have is a loose CD. If you can then get them to listen to it ( much harder without the promo material helping to sell it ), and they actually like it, then you will need to re-send everything. So - you have now paid to mail the same promo info and CD twice, made three unnecessary phone calls ( possibly long-distance ), and wasted a copy of your CD. If you make an initial contact call BEFORE sending anything, you will save yourself a lot of time and money in the long run. |
